The total charge of 4.2vdc is not going to reduce the life span of the batteries unless left at that voltage for a long period of charge. Tesla's are charged using the super charger to maximum of 4.2vdc, but the recommendation is to drive it as soon as possible so as to not leave the voltage at the maximum. Chances are you wont own the car when the batteries are starting to degrade anyway.
