Yes. I do it all the time. I'll drive on electric until I reach the
freeway then I'll switch it to gas mode until I get off the highway. It
also has a "force to EV mode" but I've never found the need to use it.
"Auto" works perfectly well.

Coming home, I don't want the EV to be used at all, since the engine is
going to have to do most of the trip, may as well let it warm up and
operate more efficiently during that 15 miles than to do only half the
distance at half the MPG during warmup... There is just little value to
depleting the battery that last 5 miles everyday when the engine is going
to have to run anyway on the trip home.
