Back when VW was still developing the "new beetle," one of the proposals I read was that it might be a diesel-ev hybrid. I think they meant a true (plug-in) hybrid, but I'm not 100% sure. This would have been 1994 or 1995. Toyota released its first generation Prius in 1997. VW veered off course with this proposal and ended up making it a rebodied ICE Golf.
