2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell: Recall Alert
February 12, 2018 Patrick Masterson

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 470 model-year 2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell
electric vehicles

The Problem: Electronic control unit software responsible for monitoring
voltage in the fuel-cell stack may misinterpret a minor voltage variance and
erroneously shut down the fuel stack in response, which could result in an
unexpected loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Honda noted that there have been no associated reports of crashes or
injuries. The automaker advised that, if the vehicle experiences this issue,
a warning message will appear on a screen below the speedometer, indicating
"Power System Problem. Stop Driving When Safe." If this warning appears,
owners should stop the vehicle in a safe location off the roadway, as soon
as possible; the vehicle can continue driving for a very short time using
electric power from the onboard traction battery, the duration depending on
the battery's current state of charge.

The Fix: Dealers will update the ECU for free.
