Uber Technologies Inc. is working with Austin officials on the city’s Smart
Mobility Roadmap by bringing its electric-vehicle pilot program to town.

Executives at the San Francisco-headquartered ridesharing business said last
week that the Texas capital is among seven cities nationwide participating
in the program.

Uber also has partnered with the Rocky Mountain Institute to help company
drivers who already have or want to use electric vehicles, such as the
Chevrolet Bolt and the Nissan Leaf, said Trevor Theunissen, an Austin-based
Uber spokesman. Austin in March became the first U.S. city to host an
all-electric fleet of cars provided by Detroit-based Maven Drive LLC, an
in-house startup by General Motors Co. ...

The institute, a Colorado nonprofit organization that advocates for clean
and renewable energy sources, has worked with Austin for years. It has
conducted focus groups and information sessions since January for Uber
drivers, Theunissen said.

The focus groups enabled Uber executives to learn what the company “can do
to make life easier” for company drivers already in electric vehicles,
Theunissen said. Issues that arose included anxiety over low-battery charge
levels and location of charging stations.

Information sessions educated Uber drivers how to talk about electric
vehicles with customers, costs associated with owning an electric vehicles
and state and federal rebate programs, among other things, he said.

Theunissen said Uber does not release the total number of company drivers
working in Austin. The company also declined to say where Austin ranked
among the pilot-program cities for total electric-vehicle drivers. The other
cities in the program are Los Angeles [CA], Montreal [.ca], Sacramento [CA],
San Diego [CA], San Francisco [CA], and Seattle [WA].

Some cities, such as Sacramento, are paying drivers for every trip using an
electric vehicle, Theunissen said. Uber has had conversations with Austin
Energy, the city’s public utility, about developing a similar arrangement,
he added.

Austin's pilot program features data in the Uber app on Austin Energy’s
charging-station network and will share feedback with Austin Energy from
drivers on the status of charging stations.

Uber passengers will receive a notification in the app when they are riding
in an electric vehicle. Riders also will receive an email when the ride is
done about the Austin pilot program.

The Austin pilot does not have an end date, Theunissen said.
