Until now, the Czech car-maker’s RS engineers have concentrated their efforts on readying faster versions of both petrol and diesel hatchbacks, wagons and SUVs, but all that changes in 2022 when Skoda launches an ‘eRS’ version of the Vision E. Skoda has already announced that in 2020 it will launch a standalone version of the Vision E concept, but until now its was thought the car-maker’s ‘RS’ badge would be reserved for more traditional performance offerings. “There will be a vRS version of our future electric car,” announced Skoda sales boss Alain Favey to Brit auto mag [ https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/skoda-launch-ers-electric-performance-suv-2022 ], Autocar. Describing further how the RS-badged Skodas (in Europe they’re badged ‘vRS’) would evolve, Favey admitted that lower 0-100km/h acceleration times might not necessarily be part of the performance division’s remit. “It will be more about styling and experience and not necessarily performance,” he said. “Customers like the sporty experience without (the car) being a flashy sports car. The most powerful vRS is 245bhp (180kW), so it’s about the look and the sporty driving of the car.” As well as giving Skoda’s battery-powered Vision E a styling kit, RS engineers could bless the electric SUV with a sportier chassis tune and configurable power delivery for more enthusiastic driving styles. The eRS could even come with an in-built synthesiser to provide for a sporty sound track. Other options include bigger brakes and even some weight-saving features. Set to introduce an RS version of the popular Kodiaq SUV later this year, the Czech car-maker’s performance sub-brand is also considering re-introducing a hot hatch based on the Fabia. Originally, Skoda sold an RS version of the Fabia supermini between 2010 and 2014. “The next-generation Fabia will come after 2020 and we are working on different options,” Favey announced, before adding: “I think there is a market for a vRS.” The “different options” being considered is a clear hint Skoda is considering a performance version that is likely to include an advanced hybrid powertrain option.
