To put this in perspective, a 1970 Datsun 240Z did 0-60 in 8.7 seconds. A Lotus Europa of the same year returned a 0-60 time of 11.2 seconds. These weren't considered slow cars in 1970. And lest you think that these cars were hobbled by 1970-vintage US emission controls, a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS-350, fitted with no more EC hardware than a PCV valve, did 0-60 in 8.0 seconds. For most of the 1970s, typical small car 0-60 acceleration ranged from 13 to 20 seconds. In 1976, VW boasted in their ads that the US-spec Rabbit could do 0-60 in 11 seconds. That was pretty darn quick for an economy car.
