At the Fakuma fair 2018, Covestro aims at exhibiting numerous fire proof
battery modules, cell holders, crash absorbers and other products that are
manufactured from polycarbonate plastics. All these components prove
advantageous in electric as well as hybrid cars.

Covestro works around high-tech polymer materials and is also one of the
leading suppliers of this material around the world. Used across numerous
industries such as automobiles, construction or electronics the firm is
constantly working towards developing sustainable and innovative solutions
for its global audience. For instance, this year, the company has plans to
highlight the use of polycarbonate plastics in electric vehicles and hence
will be demonstrating the concept at the upcoming international trade fair
for plastics processing, Fakuma 2018.

Covestro aims at displaying diverse fire proof battery modules, cell
holders, crash absorbers and other products created from polycarbonate
plastics that are used in electric and hybrid cars. All the specialised
products are extremely impact-resistant over a wide temperature range –
especially at sub-zero temperatures.

Cell Holders and Battery Modules

Covestro introduces a flame-retardant and temperature-resistant
polycarbonate ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) blend of the Bayblend FR
type. This material proves ideal for producing cell holders and battery
modules. With the assistance of the polycarbonate which is also
dimensionally stable, parts can be efficiently produced with the injection
molding process. The plastic is also used in mobile GreenPack rechargeable
batteries from the Berlin-based manufacturer of the same name.

Crash Absorber

At Fakuma, another interesting innovation that will be exhibited is the
crash absorber. The product is created by PC-PBT
(polybutylene-terephthalate) Makroblend KU-2 7912/4, which possesses high
impact strength and offers high ductility even at low temperatures. The
honeycomb structure contributes to the extreme impact resistance of the
crash absorber. In addition to this, Covestro will also be introducing the
highly filled polycarbonates material of the Makrolon TC product family.
This material is thermally conductive and is also available in electrically
insulating versions so that it can contribute to the efficient thermal
management of batteries.

Specialised Battery Packs

In today’s age, if we speak about off-road motorcycles then the trend
towards electric drive is on the rise. For instance, Californian electric
bike specialist Alta Motors is a leading manufacturer of electric
motorcycles. The company has also incorporated a battery under the name Alta
Pack. The unique feature of this battery is that it is equipped with a
jacket made of the extremely impact-resistant PC-PBT blend Makroblend by
Covestro.

At the Fakuma 2018 trade fair, Covestro will present various battery
modules, cell holders, crash absorbers and other products at its stand
number 4206 in Hall B4.
