Battery fire damages Disney car
Oct 25, 2018 Ray Lamont

An electric-powered car was damaged in a battery-related fire Thursday.

That may not sound like big news on the surface — except that the car, a
replica of a 1908 Scarlet, was used by the Walt Disney Company in films and
stage productions. It is expected to run again, its owners say.

Firefighters fielded a call at 4:27 p.m. Wednesday reporting a car fire at
Advanced Technologies auto repair at 23 Kondelin Road [map

], Gloucester Deputy Fire Chief Steve Aiello said. Once on the scene, they
found that the car had caught fire when owners were changing the vehicle's
complex batteries. One of the batteries apparently "shorted out," Aiello
said.

Lee Malo, who co-owns Advanced Technologies [atechtuning.com] with his wife,
Victoria, and who owns the classic car in partnership with Richard Benoit of
Salem, explained that the replica car's batteries are built into 16 modules,
and each "brick" includes 440 small batteries, he said.

"(The modules) run 24 volts each, so we were working with a 48-volt system,"
Malo said, "and one of them exploded."

Malo said the offending battery cell had likely been damaged in flooding
last year, and the "explosion" sent batteries sailing as much as 30 feet
into the air. But there were no injuries and firefighters put down the blaze
without incident.

Victoria Malo said that, while, the car's battery system and battery
compartment were damaged, other parts of the vehicle can be repaired.

Lee Malo also said the replica — christened "Miss Daisy" and apparently
built in the 1970s — last ran when showcased in a Peabody Santa parade. But
he, too, anticipated he'll once again be will be driving Miss Daisy soon,
returning to presentations on area roadways in the near future.

"At first, we just bought it (from a collector) to have it here at the
shop," Lee Malo said, "but then we found we could do things with it."

Victoria Malo said the vehicle and its original served in a number of Disney
productions, including as a prop car for Disney musicals. The car also
served as a parade car representing Disney when the company joined in
community celebrations.

"The basic frame of the car is still intact," she said, "so it should be
OK."
