Elon Musk was forced to throw in some extra perks for Tesla buyers Friday
after the brand cut the cost of their Model 3 Performance sedan by $5,000
and irritated those who had already purchased the package.

Customers complained directly to the CEO via social media after he shared
the seemingly good news with followers that 20-inch wheels, a carbon-fiber
decklid spoiler, lowered suspension, and quicker acceleration were available
on the model at $64,000 as opposed to $69,000.

It led the 47-year-old billionaire to offer those who rushed in early to buy
the motor, more bang for their buck.

about the cut cost

Clarifying the deal after a tweet that suggested it was a limited time sale
and the price would soon be rising again, Musk replied: 'Not going up. We
will just offer those who ordered bought 3P either $5k back or free lifetime
Supercharging.'

Supercharging the electric cars cost $0.24 per kWh and with 400kWh costing
the customer $96 in the state of New York, it will also take the driver
1,000 miles on the road.

If a person only drove the car 12,000 miles on average each year, it would
take just over four years to earn their upgrade money back.

Elon Musk: We Can't Make The $35,000 Tesla Model 3 Today, In 6 Months Maybe

Despite delivering over 56,000 Model 3s last quarter (Q3), and even more
expected in the current period, Tesla is still 6-months away to be able to
produce the long-awaited base model that has a starting price at $35,000.

According to the Silicon Valley carmaker, the Q3 starting price of the Model
3 was at $49,000.

"Better than expected Model 3 cost reduction is allowing us to bring more
affordable options to the market sooner," said the automaker.

However, CEO Elon Musk finally admitted yesterday that the Palo Alto-based
company is about 6 months away from producing the very first base version of
the Model 3.

"If we can produce the $35,000 car today, we would do it," said Musk. "But
there is more work to do before we can make $35,000 car, and have it be
positive gross margin. We're probably less than six months from that."

Last week, Tesla introduced a medium-range version of the Tesla 3 with a
260-mile estimated range and a starting price of $46,000.

"We are trying to provide most affordable electric car options that we can.
And since we just don't have the ability to get to the $35,000 car right
away, we thought this [the medium range version] might be a way to offer it
as an intermediate step."

Atherton Research's Take

The problem Tesla is facing is the high cost of producing the Model 3 which
is now on par with the Model S and X.

And if Tesla sells the $35,000 Model 3 today, it will probably lose several
thousand dollars per vehicle.

So before that happens, Tesla needs to significantly improve its
manufacturing costs and the yield of its production lines to bring the total
cost of the Tesla 3 to $30,000 or less, as Musk admitted during the
company's Q3 earnings call.

Which is why the carmaker is now so intensely focused on cost optimization,
now that it moved away from "production hell" and "delivery hell" and that
the Model 3 production is finally stabilized.
