Years ago I was hired to create ‘car noises’ for an electric 4 wheel drive ATV.
I put together a frankenboard arrangement of demo boards and a firmware friend
wrote some clever code. We were able to acquire wav files of a Harley at
different RPM as well as some jet engine noises. We created a very simple
blending algorithm which would blend adjacent RPM files (I think that they were
500 RPM apart) to create a relatively smooth increasing engine noise. The
micro controller which did all the work was connected to the throttle pot
output. We used an IP65 rated amplified outdoor speaker under the hood. It
was quite loud and very convincing. The Harley sounds worked out better than
the jet. I think the demo boards cost about 30$ or so. One PIC micro and one
CODEC. Of course for hunting you should turn off the noises:)

Paul Wallace
