On the grid for saving renewable sourced energy, hydrogen might make sense even with the low efficiency. Because there is a real potential for cheap large scale storage. But to release the energy in a mobile application with by combustion or by fuel cell is probably not a great idea. On a utility scale, after pump storage and other methods are overtaxed, it might be very useful. I am assuming some very environmentally benign battery methods don't arise. You can make a great large tank and fill it, or you can make gabillions of battery cells to store wind, geo, solar excesses, until peak times. I don't think it makes sense for personal, mobile use.
