Want to ride in a Tesla? For $250, you can be chauffeured on a one-way trip
between Houston and Austin.

Dallas is just $400 away.

Austin-based ElecTrip is billed as an energy-efficient alternative to
private flights or high-end buses. Ride with colleagues or friends, and the
per-seat cost -- the $250 and $400 price tags are for the entire car, with
prices varying based on the Tesla model and membership in a subscription
plan -- becomes more comparable to commercial flights or high-end bus
service Vonlane.

"A lot of people haven't necessarily ridden in a Tesla yet," said Eliott
Lee, co-founder of ElecTrip, "so it's a pretty neat experience for them."

Modern hitchhiking: Need to get to Austin? Startup matches up drivers and
riders

University of Texas students Lee and Mandeep Patel started ElecTrip last
year. During an internship, Patel got the idea for ElecTrip while talking to
executives about corporate travel and the need for more options when
traveling between Texas cities.

Others have also sought to address this problem, with some companies
launching membership programs for sharing private planes that fly between
major cities. At a lower price point are new bus services or Austin startup
Hitch, which has prices averaging $25 one way for those wishing to share a
vehicle with strangers as they travel between Houston and Austin.

But ElecTrip provides the luxury -- and swagger -- of riding in a Tesla. It
also allows riders to reduce their carbon footprint.

"You're doing good for the environment by taking our rides in between
cities," Lee said. "There aren't any other options that use electric
vehicles."

The trip comes with Wi-Fi, drinks and snacks. Riders are picked up from
their door and then dropped off at their destination. ElecTrip uses the
Tesla Model X SUV, Model S and Model 3. The $250 and $400 prices are typical
for riding in a Model X.
