Hope on the horizon with electric dreams new reality

The Australian car manufacturing industry has collapsed in a heap, but hope
could be on the horizon in the form of electric vehicles.

Every since Henry Ford first sent deconstructed Model T Fords to Australia
in 1908 to be assembled in Australia, we have been known for a thriving
manufacturing industry.

But our automotive industry came to a screeching halt on October 20, 2017
when the last staff at the Holden manufacturing plant punched out their
tickets for the final time.

It ended a proud history of manufacturing cars in Australia, an industry
dominated by Holden and Ford but also providing plenty of jobs at plants for
the likes of Toyota and Mitsubishi as well.

Amazingly, General Motors actually had reservations about manufacturing in
Australia and provided approval, but no funding.

However the first Holden, the 48-215 which later became known as the FX, was
a roaring success. Holden boomed in the 50s, 60s and 70s with the millionth
vehicle rolling out of the assembly line in 1962.

Ford has an even longer history, eventually stopping to import stripped down
Model T Fords and advancing to building them here in Australia by 1925.

The first Ford V8 followed in 1932 and the iconic Falcon brand was launched
in 1960 - sparking decades of competition with Holden's Commodore.

However, Ford's parent company had to cease overseas operations in 2009 to
avoid Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Mitsubishi had already left Australian shores by 2008 and Toyota held on
until 2017, before becoming one of the last plants to shut down for good.

A new hope—electric cars reviving the manufacturing industry

Casting your eye overseas, the electric car manufacturing industry is
already taking off.

China sold nearly 580,000 electric cars in 2017, which was a 72 percent
increase on 2016. Norway are the world leaders and aim to have only electric
cars on the road in 2025.

The major car companies are taking notice, with electric versions of popular
vehicles rolling out each year.

Toyota has announced a global plan to include electrification across a range
of vehicles—which could include a hybrid version of the ever-popular HiLux.

And here in Australia, the first deal to manufacture electric cars has been
signed with start-up company ACE EV opening shop in Adelaide.

Half of the parts for their electric car will be made here in Australia with
assemble expected to commence in 2020.

The company hopes to build up to manufacturing 15,000 electric cars a year
by 2025.

With proper government support, Electric Vehicle Council CEO Behyad Jafari
said electric cars could jumpstart the Aussie car manufacturing industry.

"The most difficult thing hasn’t been about realising the opportunities, but
getting the government to come to the table," Mr Jafari said.

"In every other country, the governments are throwing themselves into this
sector saying there are jobs."
