Look out, Tesla. There's a new electric vehicle on the block, and it's
making its North American debut in Seattle this week.

Polestar, an electric performance car brand jointly owned by Volvo Car Group
and Zhejiang Geely Holding, has unveiled Polestar 2. The new fully electric
vehicle is making its North America debut this weekend in Seattle. Members
of the public can come see it at the base of the Space Needle on Saturday
and Sunday.

At first glance, you might not guess the vehicle was purely electric. But
there is something fresh and new about it.

"It's a very pure design, the lines are very clean," Jonathan Goodman,
global COO of Polestar, told SeattlePI. "It has good proportions and a
muscular stance. It sits on its wheels."

You also might not peg it as a performance vehicle, boasting an all-wheel
drive electric powertrain capable of producing 300 kilowatt hours, or 408
horsepower. The vehicle can go from 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds.

"This will be a driver's car," Goodman said. "It will be fantastic to
drive."

It handles well, too, Goodman said, with wheels on the outside of a turn
accelerating to create a comfortable corner. The vehicle is built on the
Volvo XC40 platform, but the rest of the car is exclusive to Polestar. A
27-module battery pack is integrated into the floor of the vehicle, keeping
the chassis rigid and keeping the vehicle quiet.

But the Polestar 2's performance doesn't come at the expense of comfort and
practicality.

This is most clear when sitting inside the vehicle. The Polestar 2's
infotainment system of the were developed by Android and use Google apps --
meaning Google Maps and other Google Play Store apps can be run directly
from the 11-inch screen built into the center console.

"Finally, you have a car that doesn't disrupt your connected life," Goodman
said. "You have a navigation system that's always up to speed." ...

The console is customizable, with four windows that serve as blank slates
for a driver to group their favorite apps. Digital features can also be
controlled using buttons on the steering wheel.

Though the features are powered by Google, the car will work and pair with
any phone -- yes, even iPhones.

Which is especially important when you consider the car is completely
keyless. Polestar 2 can be turned on if the driver has their phone in their
pocket. The car can remember multiple phones and have personalized settings
for each. If two people with enabled phones enter the car, Polestar 2 can
recognize who is in the driver's seat and set itself to their settings.

Drivers also don't need to push a button to start Polestar 2. Once someone
with an enabled phone sits in the driver's seat, they just need to put it in
gear.

Though, a spare key will also be available in case a phone dies, or if the
driver just prefers to use a key.

The vehicle can travel 275 miles on a single charge and can go from 0% to
80% charge in less than half an hour at a quick-charging station. Owners
also have the ability to decide how much they want their vehicle to charge
and exactly when they want it to charge.

The trunk of the car has a high hinge, which will allow for stowage of large
items, including things like mountain bikes when the rear seats are lowered.
A separator also lifts from the trunk's floor, equipped with hooks to keep
grocery bags upright, for example.

Want to get in one yourself? The public is invited to check it out on
Saturday and Sunday at the base of the Space Needle on Saturday and Sunday,
July 27 and 28, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The road show continues down through
California in August, with stops in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San
Diego, before heading north to Canada in September.

The Polestar 2 will be available for order only, with the launch edition
costing $63,000. (A federal incentive for electric vehicles of $7,500 yields
a final cost of $55,000.) Production is expected to begin next year.
