Ø Unfortunately, on a Volt the gas engine doesn't charge the HV battery
pack.

What you say is “true” for normal operation. But it is still a hybrid. As
you draw power from the hybrid (via your tap into t he 12v system), it will
sense that the HV battery is being brought below its normal “hybrid” range
and it will start the engine to bring it back up to hybrid range”.

That is what the engine and HV battery are doing continuously while driving
in hybrid mode. Exchanging energy to keep the battery no lower than the
lowV set point and no higher than is needed to provide hybrid energy for
normal driving.

You are right, it will never use gas to run the engine just to replenish EV
battery miles (except a little bit in Mountain mode to make sure you have
battery power for hybrid mode when climbing a long mountain)…

Of course, in static-home-power-operation you will not see the engine start
until you have been running on the 12v system for maybe 16 hours at 1 kW.
From then on the engine will start and stop every few minutes just like as
if it was in normal driving in hybrid mode to maintain the battery between
its set points.

Though I have never run it that long. I guess some day when I arrive back
home near 0 miles EV remaining, then would be a good time to do the test.

Thanks, Bob.

I have a 2014 Volt, not a Prius..

Unfortunately, on a Volt the gas engine doesn't charge the HV battery pack.
Still a 2 kW 12V-battery charger could be useful.

Yes, the Prius has a 60 something HP gas engine that drives a 50 kW
generator that can drive the car or change the battery or whatever. NO, No
one has access to that power unless they dig into the Prius Drive system
and tap into those peak 200 amps flowing around at 250 volts without
killing themselves.

Someday the aut monufactureres will figure out that it would be nice to
give consumer s access to that kind of power as an option.

So we just draw from the 12v system and let the prius automatically use its
DC/DC converter system maintain the 12v system at above 13v while we draw
out all the power from the 12v system.

Hi Bob,

Saw your post on EVDL.

I have a 2014 Volt. As far as I know, it doesn't have an 50 kW AC output.
Am I missing something?

I know that I can use its 12 Volt accessory jack for power. Does that draw
on the main battery pack?

Thanks!
