Coimbatore might soon make its waste disposal greener and more efficient by
using electric vehicles. The city corporation has expressed interest in
purchasing electric four-wheelers to help with the door-to-door collection
of garbage. The electric vehicle should be able to haul around 1 tonne of
garbage.

Electric vehicles are gaining prominence with every passing day. More
manufacturers are entering the electric vehicle industry than ever before
and more consumers too are looking forward to buy one.

Further boosting growth is the Indian government's interest in EVs. The
government is doing its best to promote EVs and it was in the same interest
that it recently announced a sizeable cut in GST on electric vehicles.

Well, it appears that it isn't just the central government but the state
governments and governing authorities of each city are taking steps towards
electric mobility. The city municipal corporation of Coimbatore is the
latest example. The governing body took the electric route last year when it
purchased 50 electric three-wheelers for the door-to-door collection of
segregated waste. It quite obviously reduced operating costs as it was
cheaper to run electric vehicles than oil-burning diesel three-wheelers. It
was also several times more efficient when compared to the collection of
garbage using pushcarts. Going by these results, the civic authority planned
to place an order for 100 more such vehicles.

That is exactly when the complaints started coming in. The workers using the
electric three-wheelers out on the street started complaining of low battery
life, excessive wear & tear, and some unreliability issues too came up.
Hence, the coimbatore city corporation switched back to diesel-powered
three-wheelers.

On 22 August, 102 diesel-powered three-wheelers were flagged-off and the
corporation has plans to purchase 283 more vehicles. However, the municipal
corporation stressed on the fact that it would go back to electric vehicles
if the right kind of vehicle is offered at an attractive price.

A corporation source was quoted as saying, "The corporation would seek
expression of interest (EOI) from vehicle manufacturing companies that can
make electric vehicles able to carry about 1 tonne of garbage." The
requirements of the city corporation is clear. It still remains to be seen
which EV manufacturer would step up.
