That would be my guess as well. You're basically talking about an
electric transmission. The ICE --> generator --> electric motor -->
wheels setup is what trains, ships, cranes, and other large equipment
has been using for years. With large enough motors and generators, the
efficiency is so close to 100% that they can match or even improve on a
mechanical transmission.

They just separating the steps, by adding a battery for intermediate energy storage. Again, this might make the overall efficiency better, or worse. But if it is competently done, there won't be much difference. Consider hybrid cars; they generally get better fuel economy.
