Not disputing any of that, but you can pick them up for $4k-$5k with low miles.
I got mine (optioned-out convertible) with 1800 miles for $7000, and have
driven it daily for three years with no maintenance other than replacing one
tire.

I have an Electrameccanica Solo also, and it’s more fun than the Smart (aside
from not being a convertible) and even smaller. Also inexpensive. Second-gen
ones are better on fit-and-finish than my first-gen.
