The Mack LR Electric is the company's first fully electric garbage truck. It works on an electric motor and rechargeable batteries. Mack says the truck can hold a charge for up to eight hours, with a special drive train that charges the battery while it coasts to a stop, something that a trash truck does a lot. The company says it spent the last two years developing the truck. The New York City Sanitation Department will be the first agency to try using it. "We want to be in a place where we could finally find the solution that needs to be found to reduce greenhouse gases. And to get to 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gases by 2035, you need zero tailpipe emissions, so it has to be electric. It can't be natural gas," said Robert Dirico with the New York City Sanitation Department. The Sanitation Department expects to start testing out the new truck within the next few weeks. The truck will go through around six months of testing.
