I'm not so sure.  There was nothing good about that car, from front fenders 
that rusted in a year to overheated, seized engines.

Or are you suggesting that they might have produced something usable had 
they been manufacturing small cars for as long as the Japanese automakers 
had?

The odd thing is that they had.  GM owned Opel.  I'll never understand why 
they didn't just run the Opel Ascona (sold here for a while as the Opel 
1900) design through a Xerox machine in Detroit.  If memory serves, the two 
were about the same size, but the Opel was a vastly superior machine.

Funny how things have changed, though.  In 1970, Toyota was in the front row 
when drivers were waiting in gas station lines that stretched round the 
block.  Corollas arrived at US dealers and were gone within 24 hours, sold 
to the next person on the waiting list for hundreds above sticker price.  
Now, incredibly, GM is actually ahead of Toyota in EVs.  Who would have 
thought it?
