That said, the differences among the Tesla and other top contenders in this
test aren't huge.

As you correctly point out, "other EVs" suit the needs of many EV drivers. However, the market has spoken on EVs. Tesla is dominate. Among many other factors, charging infrastructure has contributed greatly to Tesla's dominance. Tesla has foreseen the need and value of the infrastructure while other manufacturers have spurned support for their cars' needed infrastructure.

Tesla's dominate range reduces the needed spacing of fast charging points.

An anecdote: I will relate recent Tesla Model 3 travels of a couple of friends from the Austin area. They took a very brief and quick camping trip to the Ft Davis area. About 1000 miles round trip plus around 100 miles touring the area. All in two nights and three days. Immediately on return, they embarked on a quick trip to Hudson Florida on an errand for me. About 2400 miles round trip. Four days on the road, three nights. All along the way of both trips, SuperChargers were spaced at 50-100 miles, denser in some areas. Target distance between charges was about 150 miles though about 250 miles is possible with that car. So, only about every second available SuperCharger was used. Typical charge time was about 1/2 hour. They, like me, greatly enjoy Tesla travel and don't need much of an excuse to embark. The existing SuperCharger network supports such travel all through the USA as well as large parts of Canada and Mexico. The network continues to expand.

For the related trips, the fuel cost was zero since the car has free SuperCharging. For cars without free SuperCharging, I estimate fuel cost would have been about $5 for each of the approximately 18 charge stops. About $100.

Incidentally, my errand was to pick up some ~130ah Valence 12v batteries. These batteries are being sold out of parted out salvage Smith trucks. Both Smith and Valence are bankrupt. At least two eBay sellers are offering the batteries for $400-$600.
