I'm no machinist; just a tinkerer working with whatever tools I have on
hand. I don't have a mill; just a drill press. So take my experience as
hints on something that worked once; not as correct practice.
In my case, I drilled a hole in my adapter plate, and pressed the
bearing into it. There was no retainer; but the bearing was constrained
by the motor's end bell, and by the mating Lovejoy coupler on the
transmission shaft.
Dennis (and others on this list) have a lot more machining experience
than I. When he said to use a double-wide bearing if there's a side load
(like a chain sprocket), that's good advice!
