If the US automakers wanted to sell EVs, they'd advertise them. When I was a pup, automakers advertised large sedans, luxury cars, and pony cars. Pickup trucks were for farmers and tradespeople. Joe and Jody Suburbia had almost no interest in them. Just about the worst shame a male teen could experience was going on a date with dad's muddy old pickup. SUVs were uncommon and uncomfortable, and were mainly used by sportsmen. I remember a late 1960s or early 1970s Tom McCahill review of (I think) a Jeep Wagoneer in which he praised its untility for sport and hunting. He wrote something like "Now THIS is what I call a sports car." But then CAFE arrived. Trucks and SUVs had much looser fuel efficiency requrements. They also had higher prices and lower development costs; the fundamental design of pickups hasn't really changed since the introduction of IFS in the 1960s. They were markedly less safe and less crashworthy, but the automakers didn't care. So the automakers decided to promote trucks and SUVs. Advertising did the deed, and you see where we are today. When there's a real advantage to them in selling more EVs - and probably the only way this will happen is through legislation - then they'll advertise them, and they'll force their dealers to sell them.
