It's true, whether the train runs in a vacuum or not has little to do
with maglev. A vacuum could be applied to any form of propulsion or
shape.

This article seems to be scarce on facts.
I agree. It's pretty short on facts and physics but long on hyperbole.
Steel wheels on steel rails are pretty darned good. It will take a *lot* to
beat them. There are already a number of wheeled +200 mph trains in regular
service.
As for static electricity, I don't see how that would work.
Neither do I. Electrostatics can levitate styrafoam; but a train?
I believe that all maglevs to date use what's known as a linear motor.
That is, the train contains fixed magnets and the track contains a
"coil" spread out.
It doesn't have to use magnets. There are maglev setups with just coils. Pretty much any
type of motor can be "unwound" to lay flat.
But the analogy breaks down because the coil is really thousands
(millions ?) of small segments and only those under the train are
activated - and using power.
Sometimes the trains have pantographs, or onboard generators for power. Lots of
systems have been proposed, and are being experimented with.
Maglev is not the only thing being studied. There are also schemes that use
compressed air, and other ideas.
I think the maglev technology is exciting. I'm wondering what will happen to
the excitement of travelling, though. Once you are in a closed tube, you can't
really appreciate the actual travel experience. Even on the TGV in france,
looking out the window is a pleasing experience.
Some of the maglev trains are run in open air, so you get the scenic view. But
there's not much scenery in a subway. :-)
