So, how can one explain the difference in drain ? How much telematics is necessary while the car is parked and unused, it just seems horribly excessive. But these designers aren't stupid, there must be a reasonable explanation.

Ah; that's an interesting idea! Like you, we never agreed to or used Nissan's 
Carwings. And like you, our 12v battery is still fine; it can easily sit for a 
couple weeks without going dead.
