There appears to be a couple of main reasons why BYD is not importing EVs to
the US:
25% tariff on Chinese made EVs (initially put in place by Trump, and extended
under Biden).
Chinese EVs are specifically exempted from qualifying for any rebates or
incentives.
BYD Likely does not meet US safety standards for items like glass, headlights,
crash testing, etc. doesn’t mean that they are unsafe, but more likely that
they just have not gone through the expensive process to have the parts listed
and made specific to US standards.
BYD itself feels that the US market is somewhat soft for EVs, as they don’t
seem to be pursuing exporting to the US.
Congressional resistance to have Chinese EVs in the US market will likely make
any import attempts difficult and expensive.
I’ve heard they importing a -European- vehicle can be problematic to import to
the US, and imagine the process to import a single example of a Chinese EV
would be at least that difficult - time consuming, expensive, and probably no
viable source for parts (like glass, passenger restraints, tail light lenses,
door locks, and a host of other parts) that would make it a compliant
road-worthy vehicle.
Other items, such as the Chinese-standard charging inlet, would need to be
re-wired to work with CCS/J1772, and the charging system might need to be
adapted as well - not sure how the Chinese GB/T connector system communicates
between the EVSE and the vehicle.
