Dear friends and colleagues in Open Space, Facilitators of OST are an addition to the system, when facilitating the Open Space Technology meeting. I hear people occasionally saying that the sponsor, often the senior leadership team, is also an addition to the group of people who are invited to the meeting, with the sponsor being the inviter, and the others being the invitees.
They are a significant force in whether the OST meeting works to its full potential in terms of the outcomes that are carried forward into the world from the OST meeting. The reason is Spirit of Intent. Do you as a facilitator check in with yourself for every meeting to touch base with your awareness of your Spirit of Intent for the meeting? If you are pleased with your Spirit of Intent, great. If you are not well pleased with your Spirit of Intent, there is work to do to transform this Spirit of Intent to one that you are pleased with. Do you as a facilitator have conversations with the sponsor to explore the Spirit of Intent? It is a valuable conversation to have. In my many years of working with OST, the two times that I got unpleasantly surprised by what was unfolding, I was aware that I had not explored the Spirit of Intent of the sponsor, and by the time we were into it, it was too late. And the people...they always, always know the Spirit of Intent of both the sponsor and the facilitator.
