Dr. Tusi Avegalio, who attended the second session from Hawai’i, spoke of Anne as a great leader, symbolized in her passing by the sea tern flying alone. Further, he said that in Polynesian culture, leadership involves healing – being made whole again. And leadership is not leading forward, but rather weaving forward. In his words... In the Islands, when we weave, we weave sails. We are a voyaging people...One person does not weave a sail. It requires at least 10 in a very straight line weaving forward, together, in unison, in spiritual precision. Because if one weave is off you can jeopardize the canoe, the voyagers, and the survival of the people in the future. And so the emphasis shifts away from the understanding that the parts make up the whole, so the emphasis is on the individual. In our world, the whole organizes the parts. So when the weavers weave forward, they are attuning to the whole.... It’s something we shared [with Anne] with great delight...If you want peace, you want harmony, if you want balance, you’ll only get there with a weave. Committed to “co-learning,” Anne fostered loving learning relationships with individuals and in the communities where she worked, enabling this kind of equality and cooperation.
