*According to Einstein the Equivalence Principle was crucial in the
evolution of his thoughts. Einstein said the idea occurred to him in 1908
and gave him the incentive to learn 4D non-Euclidean tensor calculus which
at the time he didn't know very well; he said it was "the happiest thought
of my life" although it took him another seven years, until 1915. before he
found a way to use it to invent General Relativity. And the effort nearly
killed him.   *
