That's exactly why it doesn't make sense that pain could exist at all from a mechanistic assumption. Nothing is necessary to elicit the pain response except for whatever signals engage those responses directly. You already have data, and that data can be copied or acted upon in whatever practical way is required - what possible purpose could this extra layer of "pain" serve, and how/where/what mechanism produces it?
