I'm especially fascinated by this theory that human consciousness got going via the plant teachers in the first place. I was listening to Benjamin Britten's operatic version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" the other day and it's easy to see that Shakespeare was fascinated by altered states of consciousness. Essentially that play is about consciousness-altering via herbal intervention.
