At the time the Americans were estimating that when they invaded the
Japanese mainland they would suffer 500,000 casualties; nobody will ever
know if their estimate was correct but extrapolating from their experience
at Okinawa it was not unreasonable for someone in 1945 to make a estimate
like that. And Jason ask yourself this, if you were a American soldier who
was still alive after going through 4 years of hell what would you do to
someone who told you that you and tens of thousands of your fellows needed
to die to save Japanese living in Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

Two nuclear bombs and two destroyed cities in 3 days, if I were a Japanese
leader in August 1945 that would seem like a pretty credible stockpile to
me.
