I am guessing, based on what Freeman Dyson once wrote, is that scientists rely
on new and improved equipment and can use these to discover new phenomena, and
test hypotheses. Based on his judgement, I am guessing that we have hit a
financial barrier, where to make huge and different discoveries, we'll need a
bigger boat, a bigger telescope, and more power accelerator, or neutrino
interceptor, a super LIGO. Hang some of these super detectors at the far edge
of the solar system and I suspect we'll uncover the "unexpected." Stuff, that
may not fit neatly into General Relativity or the quantum. In my imagination,
this stuff would be kilometers long, and cost  100's of billions of dollars,
yuans, ecu's to get into position and be operated mostly by machine
intelligence. No need for life support. Cheaper.

There's some on the latest skirmish on the Not Even Wrong blog:

"Now, finally, the ship of science is leaving the safe inland waterways carved
by nature, and is heading for the open ocean, exploring a brave new world with
'artificial' materials, organisms, brains and perhaps even a better version of
ourselves."

"The basic problem of current fundamental theory though is that there is
virtually no relevant data (i.e. data that disagrees with our best
model)."https://www.math.columbia.edu/~woit/wordpress/?p=12053#comment-237807

"You need data, there is no data, and there won’t be any
data."http://backreaction.blogspot.com/2020/11/the-black-hole-information-loss-problem.html
