A new technique called "cryo-ET" has allowed scientists to make the most
beautiful electron microscope pictures of the interior of cells I have ever
seen. The pictures show details that are much smaller than a wavelength of
visible light, far beyond what even the best optical microscope can see, so
that means the color in the pictures is false, but they were not chosen
randomly by an artist, they were chosen by the machine and are informative,
they depict the different ways various materials affect a beam of high
speed electrons.
