It's posturing, it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Powerful people and institutions have some of their power threatened by
cryptocurrencies. They don't like that. They have a lot of say on what the
media focuses on. People who are more left-leaning have a natural antipathy
towards unregulated transactions, and connecting this with environmental issues
makes it an easy sell.

Meanwhile the ad-tech industry is probably using an order of magnitude more
energy, while destroying democracies, increasing political polarization for
profit and decaffeinating culture to make it "ad friendly". But they have a
*HUGE* say on what the media focuses on, so that particular story does not get
a lot of traction.

(Not even to speak of the modern web and its gigantic blobs of Javascript that
keep CPUs running all over the world for who knows what. Nobody seems to care
about that.)

I say this as a fairly left-leaning person myself. I am in favor of wealth
redistribution to counteract the inexorable cruelness of the Matthew effect. I
am for socialized health care, providing the best education possible for all
kids, etc. I am also in favor of not using disingenuous and patronizing
arguments to further political agendas.
