The term comes from an expected step change where technology starts to advance hyperbolically rather than exponentially like it has been doing since Ogg smashed rocks together. Hyperbolic growth reaches infinity in a finite amount of time. It is a singularity in exactly the same sense as the beginning of the universe is a singularity or a black hole is a singularity.
