Given that people are confused what these words mean, let's define them here.
Useful = whatever contributes towards increasing happiness. Useless = whatever doesn't contributes towards increasing happiness. Of course, there is also a third word: detrimental. Detrimental = whatever contributes towards decreasing happiness. What do you think ?
