Dear Evince developers,
I would like to send you some comments regarding Evince. I'm not sure if
this is the best way, I'd rather have used some web based feedback system,
had I found one.
Generally Evince works very smoothly, and it is nice and simple to use.
Thank you for that!
However, in my opinion there are some missing and somewhat annoying
features. Therefore I suggest the following:
(1) Selecting pages for printing: It's rather difficult to print range of
individual pages. I know you can choose range of pages Print dialog, but
consider the following:
(a) If the actual page numbers in the text are different than the physical
pages (there might be a cover page and an index with separate page numbers),
I'll have to calculate the actual physical page numbers, possibly write them
down and then copy them to the Print Dialog.
(b) Suppose I want to browse a document, mark interesting pages here and
there, and print them later (yes, I can use the side pane to print
individual pages instantly, but I just might want to go these through second
time before printing)
(c) Suppose I want to print odd (or even) pages only. This feature actually
exists in the print dialog, but it's rather well hidden and would be easier
if one could just choose the pages from the side pane.
Suggestion: Add an option to to mark pages (individual, range, even, odd and
all, as well as remove all marks) into the side pane and then print the
marked ones. For example, gv, which to large extend is still the de facto
standard ps/pdf viewer, has this feature, though it does lack marking of a
page range (something like mark, and then hold-shift-and-mark would be the
standard way).
(2) Saving the last position in a document on exit and returning there when
document is opened again is sometimes handy, but mostly just annoying. My
pdf files are mostly manuals, which I usually want to start from the index,
or seminar/lecture presentations which should naturally be started from the
beginning.
Suggestion: add option to disable this. Even better: add options to choose
whether the last position is saved, and a separate one if it is used.
Further, you could add option/button to jump to saved position manually.
(3) Sometimes when page is larger than the window and one is scrolling the
page, it's difficult to see where the last "page break" was. gv has a nice
way of showing this: a thin line briefly appears where the page was last cut
by the window border. I can live without this but I would be glad to see
such a feature in Evince too
I would appreciate if some of these suggestions would one day make their way
to Evince.
Best regards,
Vesa
