Looking through configure, gnome-icon-theme dependency is mandated for
with_platform=gnome only because there is no clean way to check for
presence of hicolor-icon-theme. Unfortunately, there is no option to
select a generic *nix platform (gnome,win32 and hildon are the only
acceptable options). Would it make sense to add another platform choice?
Looking through configure.ac, adding another acceptable choice in
AC_ARG_WITH("platform" ...) would be the only change necessary. This
option can be called "linux" or "generic". Without any changes to
configure it would configure evince without any usual gnome deps and
warn about requirement for hicolor-icon-theme.
