In addition, it seems evince-thumbnailer fails silently when it cannot
save the PNG.  See:

You can file a bug, and if you feel inclined, submit a patch :-)
Although, there might be a reason to fail silently.  Not clear in:
https://git.gnome.org/browse/evince/commit/thumbnailer/evince-thumbnailer.c?id=d60348a1

That said, a quick way to figure it out would be:

$ evince-thumbnailer /path/to/pdf/file.pdf /tmp/foo.png && \
  mv foo.png /var/lib/.../myproject && echo "true"

mv will complain.
