After running evince under gdb and also with LD_DEBUG=all and LD_DEBUG=unused I am convinced that (via the magic of dynamic linking) my evince is using both GTK2 and GTK3 libraries. I think these libraries somehow detect this situation, and kill the application. Since I’m building a SLES12sp2 machine from scratch, I’m assuming that I’m including the wrong RPM files. I haven’t solved the problem as yet, but I don’t think it is really an evince issue.

Please run evince under gdb, then you would have some debbuging information. It is quite strange that you don't get any error in the command line... When I run the command or double click on the icon, it thinks for a while, and then exits. From command line, I’ve tried evince, evince-previewer with no arguments and with the full path of a PDF file. Same results always. No error message and I don’t see any messages in any obvious log files. # rpm -qa | grep evince evince-lang-3.20.1-5.66.noarch evince-3.20.1-5.66.x86_64 I build this machine from scratch so I might not have something that evince needs, but ldd does not show any missing libraries. Any thoughts on what is wrong, or suggestions as to where to look for error messages?
