I volunteer to work on this once I finish the searching stuff (which
is my last "official task"). If nothing else, I can do little things
like g_utf8_strlen to validate strings as it counts characters. And
even if there is no good solution that can be implemented as code, at
least I can research the problem some, come up with proposals for The
Right Way to do things, try to audit code for improper usage of
g_utf8_foo, etc.
