The branch is ancient and I wouldn't suggest using it as a starting point for IM/addressbook interaction. The stuff Nat has done for the dashboard seems quite a bit more sane and is interoperable with the vcard extensions Apple did for Mac OS X and iChat. It's off of http://nat.org/dashboard somewhere.
