I talked with again with RE, and it seems we had a misunderstanding (cause by my ignorance/nescience :-\ ). I think the solution with adding a switch to enable/disable the feature is fine, you should just ensure that it follows the usual mechanisms, i.e. create a configure switch, and check the availability of the pre-requisites during configure.
