Hmm, actually now you mention it ... there is a severe lacking of gnome-vfs support in evolution in general. Partially historical - it used to cause so many crashes with simple tasks - partially the complex api's in gnome-vfs. So, potentially the problem would be smaller, just make the drop text/x-uri-list use gnome-vfs rather than posix i/o.
FWIW i'm working on re-doing the importer architecture at the moment, not that the architecture itself dictates if you can use gnome-vfs uri's or not, but i'll keep that in mind.
