Probably because the encoding was broken ;-) If I recall correctly, an encoded 'word' cannot legally be embedded in another word, which it was as seen here: Rub=?ISO-8859-1?B?6Q==?=n The proper way to have encoded that would have been to encode all of "Ruben" as a single encoded word.
