Took your advice. Opened the file with vi from a terminal. Worked
fine.

The problem was that I had just installed Fedora Core 6. I am having
some problems with the new installation. I expected my text readers
(vi, emacs and gedit) to automatically be installed in 'open with' as in
the past. They weren't. As soon as a command line 'vi' worked I knew
where to check.

Sorry to take up your time with such a stupidity. Should have tried
'vi' or 'emacs' on my own.
