This is absolutely right. There is no way, short of reverse engineering the MAPI wire protocol, to connect to Exchange with MAPI unless you have something like Brutus Server on the Windows side to handle to conversion to/from native MAPI. The good thing is naturally that you can serve any number of non-Windows clients (only limited by the server hardware) by one Brutus server.
