Section 4.3 of RFC 3501 (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3501.html) says:

   A literal is a sequence of zero or more octets (including CR and
   LF), prefix-quoted with an octet count in the form of an open
   brace ("{"), the number of octets, close brace ("}"), and CRLF.

It doesn't say anything about the '+' though. In fact the formal syntax 
doesn't seem to allow it so I don't know what's going on here.

I have non-alphanumerics in my own password (using a Cyrus server) with 
no problems.
